Contest Description

 <o:p></o:p>

  1. Number of words: Essays must not be more than 750 words or approximately 3 type-written pages, double spaced.
  2. Each writing instructor may choose up to two essays per class to submit for consideration.
  3. Essay Format: Essays must be written in ink or typewritten and double-spaced.

Left and right margins are to be 1 1/2 inches.

 <o:p></o:p>

Guidelines for Participation

 <o:p></o:p>

1. Selecting Class Entries:  Instructors may select the top two entries by themselves or invite class participation in the selection process.  Some instructors have students vote on the written entries and together select the best two essays.  Instructors are asked not to select essays for submission that are not representative of students’ previous work and ability and/or may be plagiarized.

 <o:p></o:p>

2. Editing: To make the contest as fair as possible, we ask instructors not to edit student papers for them.  Teachers should emphasize that students are to write and edit their own papers and not let others outside of the classroom help them. Peer review within the classroom is acceptable.

 <o:p></o:p>

Since many of you are now working on a paper that might be developed into an entry for the contest, Ms. Agard will return your second drafts of Essay #1 to you unedited. In the weeks between now and April, we will from time to time do work in class that will help you edit and develop the paper on your own. Essay #1, whether or not you wish to enter it in the writing contest, will be due on Wednesday, April 10.

 <o:p></o:p>

 <o:p></o:p>

  1. Selection of the winners: Winners will be selected by a committee of ESL instructors from Laney College on Friday, April 18, from 12:15 to 2:30 p.m. in T450.  All interested ESL instructors are invited to participate in the judging process. Professional Development credit is available.

 <o:p></o:p>

  1. Criteria: Essays will be judged on the writer’s ability to respond to the topic with insight, depth and originality.  Naturally, grammar, structure, and punctuation errors are to be expected but should not interfere with the meaning the writer intends to convey.

 <o:p></o:p>

  1. Awards: There will be an awards ceremony on Friday, May 2, from 11:00 to 11:50 at the Laney College Theater.  All students whose essays were chosen to represent their classes in the contest will be honored at this ceremony.  The winning essayist at each level will receive a $150.00 award. The second-place winner from each class will receive a $75 award.  Chosen essayists from each class will receive a certificate of participation.
